At Houston’s Susman Godfrey L.L.P., White Males Need Not Apply…

… to its 1-L Summer Women and Minority Trial Lawyer Fellowship, which encourages applications from “students who performed extremely well in their first semester of law school, demonstrated excellence in their academic credentials and are interested in learning firsthand about trial work at one of the nation’s preeminent litigation boutiques” — but only if they are “women, minorities, LGBTQ, and anyone from a group that is underrepresented in today’s legal profession.”

This year’s impressive and impressively “diverse” winners are described here. Among them are:

  • Y. Carson Zhou is a Columbia law student “composed a proposal for reforming affirmative action policies aimed at promoting women’s participation in politics for the Constitutional Review Committee of the Ghanaian Parliament.  He is fluent in Mandarin.”
  • Thomas Mendez attends the University of Texas law school. Before that he “founded The Paideia Institute where he conducted inter-disciplinary college preparatory programs for diverse, educationally motivated high school students.”
  • Nicole Marquez has an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and attends Stanford Law School, where she “is a member of the Women of Stanford Law, Stanford Latino Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific Islander Law Students Association, and the Native American Law Students Association.” (Ms. Marquez seems to embody the concept of majority-minority in her person.]
  • Amro Jayousi “served as a diplomat and unofficial spokesperson for the Palestine Mission to the United States” before enrolling in the University of Michigan Law School. (Are Palestinians really underrepresented in the American legal profession, and if so does it really matter?)

Susman Godfrey L.L.P. is an award-winning commercial litigation firm with offices in Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York. Perhaps one of its no doubt talented lawyers can explain why it is legal to exclude white males from its prestigious summer employment/fellowship/internship program.

I’m neither a lawyer nor talented (nor associated with Susman Godfrey in any way), but I’d explain it thusly: white males have no rights.

    * White males who choose not to identify as Hispanic or Latino need not apply.

This comes as absolutely no surprise to me at all. This law firm and those like it know that no white males will even bother to apply there. After all, who would want to work for them. Of course they know it’s illegal. They just don’t care. Until someone actually files a lawsuit, they’re not going to care, but they know, as a practical matter, that no one is going to bother to do that. So on the liberals march, or should I say, goose-stepping into the Brave New World wrought by Queen Barry the First.
