Crime Wave Of (Fake) Hate Crimes

Mentioning Daisy Lundy (the UVa student who alleges that she was the victim of a racially motivated assault last year), as I did in a recent post, reminded me that I had not blogged two stories from the last week or two.

Police Say Hate Crimes Faked

A Northwestern University student who had said he was the victim of racist graffiti and a knife attack has been charged with felony disorderly conduct after he admitted to police that both reports were fake, officials said Tuesday.

Alleged Hate Crimes Deemed Fraudulent

A recent police report issued by the SF State University Police provides new information in the alleged hate crimes on campus. According to the report, racial epithets written on the doors of two African-American students were not the product of racism, but rather a way to bring racial issues on campus to the forefront of the university.

Maybe Daisy Lundy, on the other hand, really was the victim of a race-based assault at UVa, as she claims. So far it’s only her word against widespread but unarticulated doubts.

Is this belief that the attack didn’t occur widespread at UVa?

No doubt doubting Ms. Lundy is per se racist, Linden.

I was appalled when I first heard about this alleged assault. Needless to say, I was even more appalled after talking with other Black friends, and people who live on the Lawn, who agree with me that it was most likely staged. My first year at The University there was a Black StudCo President, Howard (I forget his last name.) There were subsequent Black leaders represented in Judic, Honor, and StudCo. In my four years of involvement in UVA student govt, I received no threats and neither did any of my Black colleauges who were involved in student leadership. The assault was very timely and well calculated. I feel bad for Ed. He’s a good guy. He worked his way up the StudCo ladder, only to lose the position b/c of some well-planned hi-jinx, to a 2nd year with no StudCo experience. It’s a shame that this event has brought unecessary negative attention to UVA. I think Lundy and some higher up people benefitted greatly by this stunt. They owe the University and the nation an apology. It’s fake events like these that trivialize real race assaults…(remember the boy that cried wolf too many times?) Lundy will always live with the guilt of knowing what really went down. She’ll have to live with this for the rest of her life. All we can do is pray for her and her accomplices, that they would ask forgiveness for their deeds and have resolution over the matter….and come to be right with the Lord. Lord bless them with repentence and peace.
