Starting Monday employees of the University of Virginia, complying with instructions from Gov. Mark Warner (D) last summer, must get a written price quote from a minority or woman-owned business for all purchases except for over-the-counter.
How to tell which firms qualify? The state has a database of certified minority and woman-owned businesses. The article does not say whether any, or how many, of those bids must be accepted if they are not the lowest.
The point is to correct the state
Does that include the watermelons for the faculty picnic?
Good intentions…
Minoritiy set aside purchases are one of the best demonstrations that government really has enough funding but chooses to spend it on things other than its core mission.
It also demonstrates that Universities are more interested in social engineering instead of academic educations.
If anyone company wants to put me on their board of directors, I’d be happy to do that for a small fee.

Hah. That’s not very capitalist. Keep in mind though, that it’s only required that they get a price quote. I assume this means they’ll still choose white- or male-owned businesses that give a better offer?
