Man Bites Dog! U-M To Comply With Prop. 2!

On January 10 University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and Provost Theresa Sullivan sent an email to faculty and staff announcing that, as required by the constitutional amendment approved by Michigan voters in the last election, “our admissions and financial aid processes will not discriminate, nor grant preferential treatment to, any individual on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin.”

HatTip to Terrence Pell of the Center for Individual Rights, whose legal efforts were instrumental in forcing this compliance.

Pell commented, and I certainly agree, that this is a big step forward. Who knows? If Michigan actually does stop discriminating on the basis of race, its faculty and staff might eventually come to like the feel of practicing equality and commend it to others.

FYI, John, there was a surprising and reasonably fair story on this yesterday afternoon on NPR.
